Clinton clone

CLINTON WOODS may have hung up his own world champion gloves - but he is now helping train a 'clone' who may one day be winning major titles himself.

Sheffield's one-time IBF light heavyweight champ says he is struck by the similarity in the style and stance of novice middleweight Liam Cameron.

"He is very like I was when I first started out," says Woods, harking back to 1994.

"Liam is very tall, full of promise and like me years ago, has to learn to adapt to fight inside rather than simply using height and reach.

"He doesn't bend his legs enough, ducking down to avoid shots and saving energy, which is something (promoter) Dennis Hobson was always on at me about.

"But he clearly has a lot of talent and potential. He has a great jab, a strong right hand - the boy can certainly whack - and has developed a very good defence."

Cameron, who is also a male model for Italian fashion label Prada, is trained full time by Steel City coach Chris Smedley.

Now Woods, who admits to the odd hankering to make a professional comeback to the game, is considering applying for a professional training licence.

"For me, the best way to help Liam is to spar a few sessions with him.

"I enjoy it because he is a nice kid and I wouldn't do it if he thought he was some kind of superstar.

"I takes time to develop from amateur to professional. He's only had two at pro level and needs to build up strength and experience.

"But it would be brilliant if he was to win a few titles, definitely he'll win domestic ones, further down the line and I think he will achieve that."

The Myrtle Springs school old-boy, from Manor Park, next fights on January 22 at the Brentwood Centre, London.
