DONCASTER history maker Jamie McDonnell was on hand to open up the sort of gym that he once came from.
Stainforth ABC, based in the town’s first ever world champion’s home town, have moved into new premises on Station Road and they invited the bantamweight along to give it his seal of approval.
Head trainer Paul Thompson said: “It was great of Jamie and his brother Gavin to give us some of their time. Jamie is regarded as the best ever boxer from our town and he did so brilliantly to win the world title but he got the basics from a gym like ours.
“Gyms like this breed the next generation, it’s grassroots boxing and if we can find the next Jamie it will be something we can be proud of.”
Thompson has 25 regulars training with the club with six carded and five more expecting to be involved in bouts within the next season.
A change was needed from their old regime and the new premises, which were once an amusement arcade, will help Thompson and his other trainers to maximise their time on developing their products.
“At the old gym we had to put up and take down the equipment all the time, which used to eat into what little time we had. The owners were good to us but it was a nightmare really,” added Thompson.
“This feels and looks like a gym and it will help us to get kids off the streets and into boxing.”
