Cameron won't peak until 2016

STEEL City coach Chris Smedley is adamant Liam Cameron remains a long way off being the finished article and believes the young fighter will not peak until 2016.

Talented light middleweight Cameron, a Sheffield United supporter, notched the eighth win of his career at Doncaster Dome on Saturday, recording a four round stoppage triumph over journeyman boxer Lester Walsh.

Now Cameron's trainer, Smedley, is currently in discussions with top promoter Dennis Hobson to determine who the 'Cannonball's' next opponent should be.

Smedley said he is encouraged by the improvement in Cameron's uppercut.

"He is throwing more of them and landing them whereas before he was reluctant to throw them," said Smedley. "Technically, his variety of shots are coming on.

"I think he will be something special but he is only 20 and he will probably not peak until he is 25. He is a young lad and he is still learning the ropes."

Smedley told The Star he plans on giving Cameron one more bout at six rounds. He ideally wants the promising youngster, a Myrtle Springs school old boy from Manor Park, to face an experienced puncher. Albania's Kreshnik Qato is believed to be a possible match up.

He said: "We will be looking to step up Liam's opponents. We were very happy with what he produced against Lester (Walsh) considering he had a bit of a cold. He did what he had to do and now we will move on."

Smedley also paid tribute to fitness coach Mark Willie for the work he has done with Cameron, saying: "We have got him involved in Liam's conditioning and he has taken a lot of pressure off me.

"Mark's support has allowed me to spend more time to work with Liam on the technical side. I am so glad we got Mark on board."
