Cameron is called up for GB camp
LIAM Cameron's ascent to the top of British amateur boxing was further aided today.
The 18-year-old Steel City gym prospect, who is welterweight English and British champion, has just received an invitation to attend a GB assessment camp at the English Institute of Sport in the Sheffield from July 17 to 19.
The purpose of the camp is to give boxers from the home nations the opportunity to be considered for the GB podium and development squads.
The focus of these squads is to prepare for the Olympic games in 2012 and beyond .
Former Myrtle Springs schoolboy Cameron, from Manor Park, is delighted by his progress and said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Star for their support.
"Because of The Star I have received a local sponsor, Sheffield Kitchen Outlet on Carlisle Street East."
Cameron was crowned British champion last month, beating West Ham boxer Dudley O'Shaughnessy 15-2 in Liverpool to become national champ at 69kg.
He wants to box in the Olympics, but also has a hankering to turn professional, eventually.
