AVID Sheffield Wednesday supporter Nicki Smedley is poised to have a special guest at ringside for his English title fight against Nigel Wright.
Owls striker Clinton Morrison is set to cheer on the Woodthorpe puncher at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre next Saturday.
It turns out Morrison is a big admirer of the up-and-coming light-welterweight and asked Smedley to walk to the ring wearing his Wednesday shirt.
Trainer and dad Chris Smedley told The Star: “Nicki had no hesitation in agreeing to that. Clinton is on holiday at the moment but I think he is going to try and come down and support Nicki.
“Nicki can’t wait to walk on to the ring with it on. He is a Wednesday fan so he feels honoured to do that.”
Smedley senior quipped: “We just hope he performs better than what Sheffield Wednesday did last season!”
Unbeaten fighter Nicki is the chief support act on the Dennis Hobson show, which will be televised live on Sky.
It will be the first time in the 25-year-old’s career that he faces going 10 rounds but Chris believes he is ready and up for the challenge.
“It is a great opportunity for Nicki,” said Chris. “If he does what we know he can do, he will come away with a win.
“There is no pressure on him whatsoever. A lot of people expect Nigel to win; he has got the title so he has got everything to lose.”
He added: “Nigel is a good technical boxer. He is very experienced, awkward southpaw but he does struggle against young kids.
“Nicki loves boxing in Sheffield. He is taking it all in his stride and he can’t wait to show what he can do.”
