Top amateur prospect Dalton Smith has achieved passage into the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.
The Sheffield boxer was again a brilliant ambassador for England, as he beat Keegan O’Kane Jones from New Zealand.
Smith, currently ranked number five in the world at 60kg, fights a Northern Ireland opponent, Stephen McKenna, next.
He said: “I am more than confident of winning a gold medal.”
Smith has disciplined himself to avoid the undoubted charms of the South Pacific island.
He said: “The weather is really hot but I am staying away from it. I am here to win a gold medal not just have a holiday. I just need to stay focused.”
The Steel City teenager - whose ambition is to fight in the Olympics - started the competition with a strong performance against a game Australian Harrison Garside. The England Boxing organisation said it was “a bout worthy of the final.”Smith said the win over Jones was “easy” adding: “I have now guaranteed my self a bronze medal.”
