GIANT South Yorkshire heavyweight boxer Richard Towers is celebrating his 13th professional win, writes digital editor Graham Walker.
It follows a fifth round technical knock-out of American Howard Sconiers on the Star backed Hatton Boxing show at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge.
Main event star Gary Buckland retained his British super-featherweight title with a unanimous points win over Paul Truscott at The Star backed Hatton Boxing show.
Buckland’s younger brother, Mitchell, started his professional career with a win over London’s Ideh Ockuko at Ponds Forge.
Towers’ bigger punches came from round four and a clubbing right hand just 27 seconds into the fifth prompted the referee to stop the fight.
Towers’ says the win will send a warning signal to fellow heavyweight such as Brits Tyson Fury and David Price.
Sconiers, aged 35, once lost a split decision to Razor Ruddock and last month outpointed three-time world title challenger Jameel McCline.
Towers, 32, a 6ft 8ins man-mountain, said: “Sconiers is a tricky guy.
“It took me three rounds to get warmed up. Then everything worked like clockwork. I felt what he had to offer and when the time was right I put him away.
“Sugar Ray Leonard said the biggest sin in boxing is inactivity. But I’m firing on all cylinders.
“The Ingles are pushing me as they should and I’m doing evertythin I’ve been told to do. I hope this is going to be a big year for me.”
Middlesbrough fighter Truscott had been tipped by some to upset the odds against St Joseph’s trained Buckland in the title fight.
But in the end it was a one-sided fight with Buckland looking now ready for European and Commonwealth challenges.
Truscott, down in the tenth round, looked utterly drained and dug deep to survive.
Buckland’s brother, Mitchell, the lightweight prospect from Cardiff and Hatton Promotions’ most recent recruit, was floored in the first round but got up and recovered well.
He recorded a 39-38 victory on one of the judge’s scorecard.
