Becoming a Dad won’t put Brook off his game

Trainer Dominic Ingle has shrugged of the ‘mind games’ employed by the Hatton camp ahead of Kell Brook’s big domestic tear-up at Sheffield Arena.
Brook’s partner Lindsey is due to give birth to their first child in February and the opposition camp reckon that might take the Sheffielder’s eye off preparation for his battle with Matthew Hatton, on March 17.
In fact, Matthew’s partner Jenna is also getting ready to give birth, in early March, although it is their second child.
“Jenna and I have gone through it before so there’ll be nothing new there for us,” said Hatton. “But for Kell it’s a new experience becoming a father for the first time.
“It’s absolutely amazing of course, but it’s a real shock and it takes some getting used to. It can be a really difficult period and it’s hard to stay focused on training. But sometimes in life there are more important things than boxing and being a father is one of them. When you bring kids into the world you have to provide for them so it’s a motivation for the training and the fight as you are doing it for their future.”
Ingle recognised Hatton’s interest as the first shot in a media war and an attempt to get inside Brook’s head.
“By suggesting having your first child is unsettling, well you can see what they are up to”” said Ingle.
“For Kell this hype will go over his head. He is a couple of weeks in front, in terms of training, and without being chauvinistic I am pretty sure he’s leave most of the baby stuff to his Mrs! “Having a kid is a big event, ofcourse. But boxers have had to overcome lots of things - like deaths of parents for instance - during the run-up to fights.
“The truth is that the Hattons know Kell’s last four or five fights have been great performances so they are having to look hard for anything they think they can use as an advantage. So far they haven’t come up with anything good but will keep trying the closer it gets. It is part of the game. But Kell has a lot of family support and this will not faze him.”
Last week while Sheffield was gripped by icy temperatures, Brook and stablemate boxers were sunning themselves. Invited over to Fuerteventura by businessman and boxing fan Adam Bailey, the team began preparations for a variety of shows taking place in Sheffield over the coming months.
Brook was taken aback by the amount of interest they received.
“We had a fantastic time in the Canary Islands and the expat community, in particular, really welcomed us,” he said.
