ADAM Etches will be doing his best to ruin Britain’s international relations with eastern Europe on Saturday, writes Bob Westerdale.
The Sheffield middleweight takes on Bulgarian Stilian Kostov at Ponds Forge. He is one of four out of five of Etches’ recent opponents from overseas.
The unbeaten Birley brawler has beaten another Bulgarian and fighters from Belarus and Estonia in the last year.
Etches says: “It’s hard to get the right match with English fighters. Some on their way up are wary of my KO rate (66%) while journeyman don’t want to get stopped because they won’t be allowed to fight again for a month. Fighters from abroad are more reliable, they will come to fight.”
The former Dronfield Sir Henry Fanshawe schoolboy has sold 600 tickets for his six rounder on the undercard of a show in which Gary Buckland defends his British super-featherweight title against Paul Truscott. Chesterfield fighter Scott Jenkins has sold around 400 tickets.
Promoter Ricky Hatton: said: “Sheffield is a boxing hotbed - these amazing sales prove it.
“We’ve squeezed in a few more seats; a limited number of tickets are now available.”
