BETTING: Bookmakers favour Owls for survival
UNBEATEN in four matches, Sheffield Wednesday's fate is still in their own hands at the foot of the Championship even though they are currently in the bottom three following Crystal Palace's spirit-crushing last-gasp equaliser.
Online firm Coral.co.uk acknowledge as much and, encouragingly for the Hillsborough faithful, quote five teams at shorter odds than the 4/1 they post against Brian Laws' men going down.
Nevertheless, Wednesday have to obtain the points to haul themselves clear of danger and that will not be easy, especially when you consider that they entertain leaders Stoke tomorrow.
Respective positions mean it is the visitors who command favouritism in places, though at 9/5 with Betdaq, City are rated as marginal outsiders. Laws' men are a market-best 7/4 to land a vital three points with Betfred, who side with Tony Pulis' men ahead of a clash bet365 rate at 23/10 to end in stalemate.
Confident home supporters, noting the fact that the Owls beat the Potters 4-2 earlier in the campaign, will probably prefer Betdirect's 10/1 for the Owls to record a result they came so close to managing a week ago; a 2-1 success. However, the safest bet given Wednesday's current form is arguably Blue Square's 8/15 for them to either win or draw.
Sheffield United have recorded four straight wins and are now just six points adrift of the play-offs, prompting Coral.co.uk to cut their odds of making a late burst and gaining promotion, to 12/1. This weekend however, they will find it tough to continue their winning streak against another in-form team, Preston, who have won five of their last seven and are classed as 5/4 favourites by VCBet.
The Blades are 11/5 (Canbet) to make it five in a row at Deepdale but with both sides playing well, the value would seem to lie with bet365's stalemate quote of 9/4, Betfred's 11/2 for a 1-1 scoreline and the 4/1 Blue Square quote for the clash to be level at each half.
Another match in which the spoils could be shared takes place at Barnsley, where Betdaq's struggling 7/2 outsiders Barnsley will be hoping to improve their away form.
In League One, Sportingbet's 5/4 chances Doncaster can see off promotion rivals Nottingham Forest in a tight home affair when a 1-0 home win catches the eye at 7/1 with Betdirect.
Chesterfield are a generous 6/4 (VCBet) to overcome Dagenham and Redbridge but Rotherham, a 2/1 shot (Betdaq), may have to settle for a point (9/4, Blue Square) at Morecambe.
