ROTHERHAM’S Tour de France cyclist Ben Swift says it has been a season to remember.
Swift, from Dinnington, has enjoyed a series of high profile wins during 2011, which led to his selection for his first Tour in the Team Sky squad.
The 23-year-old, who will take part in the Track European Championships at the end of the month, admitted: “This season I’ve experienced so many highs. It’s been a bit of a surprise really because I never expected to take five wins.
“To be honest, once I’d got my third win at Castilla y Leon I wasn’t expecting any more, but then my other two came pretty thick and fast. My most enjoyable win was the one at Romandie.
“Beating Oscar Freire was the icing on the cake as well because he was one of my childhood heroes. To be able to rub shoulders against and even beat guys like that has been a dream come true.”
Swift said the highlight of his season was competing at the Tour in July. Although he thinks the demands of the race hampered his results later in the year: “Earning a ride there was absolutely amazing.
“But at the same time I think it also marked the pinnacle of my campaign.
“The high that I experienced from riding the Tour meant that I experienced a bit of a low after it, and I was never able to really regain my form.”
