ROTHERHAM’S Ben Swift will not be contesting for an Olympic gold medal on the track at the Games in London this summer.
Swift has given up on trying to make the men’s pursuit team to try and fight for a place in the road race squad.
The 24-year-old had a successful World Championships earlier this month in Melbourne when he won a gold and two silvers in non-Olympic disciplines but found himself as the sixth man in the five strong pursuit squad.
He said: “It’s disappointing but I knew going into the Worlds I had to have a back up plan. I needed to make a call which was I was going to go and I’ve done that.”
Swift is next in action at next month’s Giro d’Italia.
