Basketball: Sheffield Sharks try out new recruits
SHEFFIELD Sharks will have the opportunity to try out their new recruits in competitive action before the BBL Championship gets under way.
With the BBL moving the Trophy group stages to before the start of the league season, it will allow Sharks player-coach Atiba Lyons to assess his squad, particularly new players.
As yet Lyons is the only named inked onto the Sharks team sheet.
However, signings are expected to be announced soon as players begin to make up their minds where they want to play.
The best Americans often look to Europe before settling for a place in Britain.
Sharks have several key members of last season's team that they want to bring back and once those deals are finalised they will step-up their search to replace star guard Mike Cook.
It seems inevitable that Cook will leave after declaring his intention to move away.
The BBL Trophy, which reverts back to regional group stages for the opening round with these games when it tips the season off on September 17, will give the third year player-coach his first look at whether his summer recruiting has gone to plan.
The four group winners progress through to the semi final round with both the semi and final rounds of the competition taking place over two legs (aggregate scores) at the competing club venues in the first half of the season.
Sharks could be drawn in a group of death with league champions Newcastle and play-off runners-up Glasgow.
