NICK Lewis and Zach Gachette are in a battle to see who will replace BJ Holmes as Sheffield Sharks’ starting point guard if the American is ruled out of Friday’s BBL Trophy quarter-final with Glasgow Rocks through injury.
Holmes is still a major doubt for the Sharks as swelling to his injured shin has prevented an x-ray from taking place.
If he is absent at the EIS Sharks coach Atiba Lyons says he is prepared to throw either 22-year-old Londoner Gachette or 19-year-old Canadian Lewis into the starting five. “BJ will be a game-time decision, we’ll just have to see how he is,” said Lyons.
“I’ll see how Zach and Nick look during practice this week and then decide which one of them will start if BJ isn’t fit.”
Both Gachette and Lewis are students at Sheffield Hallam University as part of the Sharks link up with the university.
Lyons coaches Hallam’s first team so knows the pair well and would trust either to perform against the Rocks.
However, while acknowledging it would be a blow to lose Holmes, Lyons said it is in other areas that Sheffield need to improve if they are to make the Trophy semi-finals.
He said: “It would affect our offensive rhythm but it is on defence that we need to do better. I think our two losses last weekend have brought us back down to earth after a couple of wins. They know what they need to do.”
