The Sharks are to lose big man Paul Williams to BBL rivals Plymouth Raiders.

American Williams hasn’t been offered a contract by the Sharks for the new season and the big-spending Devon club have been quick to make a move offering a one-year deal. The 6ft 10in centre had a good year in Sheffield as he grew in stature throughout the campaign.

His passing and rebounding skills were a major factor in Sharks retaining the BBL Cup, finishing third in the league and reaching the finals of the Play-offs.

Sheffield’s young basketball star Devon van Oostrum played an important part in Great Britain’s 96-70 victory against the Netherlands yesterday in Cobham, Surrey.

Point-guard van Oostrum, aged 18, who plays for Spanish Premier League club Caja Laboral, broke a tie with a drive to the basket to open the second period and he hit a three during a 14-2 run to send GB into the final break 67-55 ahead.

The former Silverdale school student and Junior Sharks player could make the squad for the EuroBasket championships later this month in Lithuania after impressing coach Chris Finch.
