The Sharks have received a blow with news that their junior programme will be changing its name to the Sheffield Saints.

At the Junior Sharks Annual General Meeting this week, club members decided by an overwhelming majority to drop the Sharks name and align themselves with the Saints, who are also based at the All Saints school sports centre on Norfolk Park Road.

While there was no legal link between the senior Sharks team and the junior club the benefits for both through sponsorship and branding have lasted for more than a decade. However, chairman of the junior club, Dave Ransom, told The Star that the time was right for a change.

He said: “This isn’t a decision that was taken lightly but we feel it fits in the best with our plans for the club.

“We have moved venue to All Saints and we’re also part of a larger network that includes teams such as the Sheffield Hatters.

“Some of our members were very much in favour, others weren’t sure and others didn’t want to change. We had a debate about it at the AGM when our full membership would have a chance to discuss it. The result of the vote was clear.”

The name change will take effect from next season as the sport’s governing body is informed, website addresses are changed and new branding is created.

The Star understands that the Sharks have yet to be formally informed of the decision. But it may open up the opportunity of Sharks creating their own junior programme.
