Sharks bask in cup glory

Sheffield Sharks players are basking in the glory of their BBL Cup final win on Sunday.

Despite being cup holders Sharks were considered underdogs before their match with league-leaders Mersey Tigers at the NIA in Birmingham.

Form had been patchy in recent weeks but player-coach Atiba Lyons rallied his team to turn in their best performance of the season in a comfortable 93-66 victory. It is the first time a club has retained the Cup.

Sharks forward Mike Tuck, who has accepted his role as first off the bench to enable Lyons to start with three guards, said it was an excellent all-round effort:

"They're top of the league but we didn't really know what to expect, we thought it would be a tough game for us.

"It was one of our best defensive performances of the season. We controlled it at both ends of the floor. I'm just really happy. Other teams will be gunning for us now. This will help bring momentum, which we'll take back to the regular season."

Match Most Valuable Player, Steve Dagostino, who set a new final record of 35 points including eight three-point shots, said: "We felt that we're just as good a team as them. We wanted to prove that. Everybody did their part. Marcus Stout did a good job guarding Andrew Sullivan; Mike Tuck did great off the bench and Olu Babalola got us going early in the second half. This MVP award is for everyone; it was a team effort and that's why we won by 30 points."
