SHEFFIELD Sharks were given a rude-awakening in what is required to be trophy contenders as they were soundly beaten at title-chasing Leicester Riders yesterday.
The Sharks have a very winnable BBL Trophy semi-final coming up against Cheshire Phoenix but were no match for the Riders who have already won the BBL Cup and look set to push Newcastle Eagles all the way for the BBL Championship.
Sharks led 12-8 midway through the first quarter at Loughborough University, but once Leicester had levelled at 16-16 at the end of the opening period there were few problems for the home team.
Sheffield’s last lead was at 26-25 with two minutes 24 seconds left of the second quarter. Riders finished the half with a 7-2 burst to lead 32-28 at the interval.
And they pushed on during the third quarter to open up their first double digit lead at 51-39 on Jay Couisnard’s two.
Taking a 52-42 advantage into the final quarter Leicester didn’t allow Sharks to mount any kind of comeback as they won the period 20-9 to seal the victory.
