Former Silverdale school pupil and Junior Sharks player Devon Van Oostrum is a key part the Great Britain men’s basketball team. Currently playing for Tarragona in Spain,

19-year-old point guard Van Oostrum is receiving attention from scouts of American NBA clubs.What have you been doing today?

Today has been my rest day. I usually use this day to catch up with my friends and family back home.

Who is your inspiration and why?

I don’t really have an inspiration.

Which sports star did you admire when you were growing up?

I admired many sports stars growing up, but no one as much as my older brother (Nigel, who plays for American college team Frankin Pierce) who I always looked up to as an example in life.

What’s your favourite other sport?

My favourite other sport is probably football.

Who is the most famous person in your phone?

Luol Deng (plays for NBA side Chicago Bulls and Great Britain).

When was the last time you cried?

Couple days ago watching Transformers 3...

Who or what are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of my little brother Sam. Both his brothers are out of the country and I know it’s hard for him at home with no one teasing him anymore.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received?

Mum mum told me that whatever I’m doing make the most of it and to always have a smile on my face.

When did you know you were good at what you do?

At about 10 years old I thought to my self I could go far with this.

What one item do you take with you wherever you go?

My iPhone.

What is the most nervous you’ve ever been?

Eurobasket 2011.

Do you ever doubt yourself?

Never.

What is your view on social networks like twitter and Facebook?

It’s very addictive! But a great way for me to stay in contact with my family friends and fans.

How do you relax away from sport?

I like to go to the beach, watch films and travel.

Where was your last holiday - and would you go again?

My last holiday was in La Palma (it was for basketball purposes but it still counts as a holiday). Yes i would go back but only in the summer time!

Do you cook? If so what’s your favourite - if not who provides that favourite meal?

I’m not the greatest cook… My mum makes my favourite dish - lasagne.

What was the last book you read?

The last book I read… Probably Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

If you weren’t doing what you do, what would you do?

I’d like to be in athletics if it wasn’t for basketball.
