New owners take over at Sharks

Sheffield Sharks have assured season ticket holders that their seats are safe despite the club changing ownership.

As the fixtures were announced news broke that Sharks' parent company, MLS Sports Ltd, has folded and a group made up of club officials Sarah Backovic and John Timms, player-coach Atiba Lyons and local lawyer Stephen Shore has taken over.

Backovic said: "In the economic climate it is getting increasingly hard to generate enough revenue to keep the Sharks competitive. We feel that the new partnership is more focussed in taking the club forward in a commercially viable way. As far as the fans are concerned nothing has changed; a Sharks team will be tipping off against Glasgow Rocks in the BBL Trophy on September 17 at the EIS as usual.

"It is a tough time for many sports organisations so we'd ask our supporters to continue to give us the tremendous backing that they have over the years. Fans who have bought season tickets are guaranteed their seats."

Sharks' league campaign begins on Friday October 1 against Plymouth Raiders. Notable early season fixtures are the visit of champions Newcastle Eagles on October 29 and the defence of the BBL Cup, which starts against either Plymouth or MK Lions on 12 November.

The BBL campaign will tip-off this year with the group stages of the Trophy. Sharks have been drawn alongside Newcastle Eagles and Glasgow Rocks with the winner progressing to the semi-finals.
