Matt's finishing puts Sharks in the picture
Worcester Wolves 100 Sharks 109
SHEFFIELD Sharks showed they now have the maturity to make a run at the play-offs with a win at Worcester Wolves last night.
Having clinched their post-season berth on Friday with a victory over Scottish Rocks at the EIS there was a danger that Atiba Lyons's team could take their foot of the pedal and allow sixth place to slip from their grasp.
As it turned out, Sharks were fired up to cling on to that top-six position, which brings with it a trip to Leicester Riders on Wednesday night in the first round of the play-offs.
Sharks big man Matt Gorman put behind him a couple of average performances to lead the scoring with 28 points and 9 rebounds. Lyons admitted that when Gorman is in form it makes Sheffield a different team.
"Matt stepped up tonight. He's had a stomach bug which has affected him over the last week but he was big for us tonight."
Sharks began poorly as Wolves opened up an 18-5 lead. A 6-0 run last in the period trimmed it back to 28-23 but Worcester ended with the final four points.
The second quarter saw two threes by Gorman, one by Sherman Rivers and strong play from assistant player-coach Todd Cauthorn brought Sharks back to within two at 49-47.
Wolves finished the half well though and it took a Gorman shot on the buzzer to cut the lead to 61-56 at the interval.
Back-to-back threes by Chris Sanders and Perry Lawson tied the match at 64-64 and another three from James Whyte gave Sharks their first lead of the match at 69-68.
A7-4 close to the period saw Wolves move 88-85 ahead.
Sharks took the lead for good on a Rivers free throw at 94-93 and they stretched it out to 107-96 courtesy of an 8-0 run started with a Gorman three.
Scorers: Gorman 28, Rivers 26, Brown 16, Sanders 14, Whyte 13, Cauthorn 9, Lawson 3.
