Injury may end sharpshooter’s Olympic dream

SHEFFIELD Sharks and Great Britain shooting guard Nate Reinking is facing a race against the clock to be fit for the rest of the season and even the Olympics.

Reinking, who rejoined the Sharks in the summer with the aim of staying match sharp for this summer’s Olympic Games in London, picked up an injury to his right knee last Friday in the BBL Championship loss at Newcastle Eagles. It is a blow to the likeable Reinking who has served the Sharks well during two spells with the club and is an integral part of the Great Britain set up under former Sheffield boss Chris Finch.

He told The Star: “It (the Olympics) was the first thing I thought of because it’s my ultimate goal. At the moment I don’t know what the extent of the injury is.

“I’m having some scans next week so I’ll know more then. I have some crutches to get round on and I’m waiting for the swelling to go down.”

The injury to Reinking, as well as being a personal tragedy to the player if he is forced out for a long period, is also another disruption to the Sharks line-up.

Point guard Jimmy Langhurst’s long standing paperwork problems with the BBL is moving closer to being resolved and he could be available for the Worcester Wolves match tonight.

It is hardly an ideal situation for player-coach Atiba Lyons, who hasn’t had a full strength squad to pick from all season and will now probably be without his best player in Reinking for the rest of the campaign.

Worcester arrive at the EIS in red hot form having lost just once in their last nine Championship matches.

However, Sharks beat them in Sheffield earlier in the season 76-75 on a Reinking buzzer beater.
