sheffield basketball starlet Devon Van Oostrum is making a big impression on Great Britain head coach Chris Finch.
Van Oostrum, aged 18, a former Silverdale School student is training with Finch and the men’s squad ahead of EuroBasket in Lithuania, which starts on August 31.
Finch says Van Oostrum, who plays in Spain for Premier League club Caja Laboral, has progressed since last summer when he took part in a senior squad camp before the Euro qualifying matches.
“His game is a lot more controlled now,” said ex Sharks play-caller Finch, who has just been appointed as an assistant coach at NBA team Houston Rockets.
“He has a great feel for the game; is skilled, extremely quick and the position he plays is where we need a clever, quick, crafty point-guard.”
Finch hasn’t ruled out selecting Van Oostrum for his final squad for Lithuania.
He said: “We’re not playing politics here. With all the young players we want them to compete. He’s definitely still in the mix.”
Van Oostrum is part of the Great Britain squad who will play Netherlands tomorrow and Nigeria on Tuesday in Cobham, Surrey.
