Despite a brave late run Sheffield Sharks’ shooters went cold when it mattered most as they went down on Friday night at home against Cheshire Phoenix.
Sharks had been held scoreless during the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter as Cheshire overturned a four point deficit to lead 83-73.
However, Sheffield rallied superbly with point guard Jerrold Brooks sparking a 16-7 run which pulled Sharks back within one at 90-89.
Captain Mike Tuck missed with a three-point shot, which would have given Sharks the lead, and Phoenix were able to finish the match with a 7-0 burst as Mike Cook and Brooks also failed to connect from long range.
Sheffield, who lost on the opening night of the season against Newcastle Eagles, have now been defeated in their first two matches of the campaign.
New signing TJ Robinson made his debut for the Sharks and contributed well to a first quarter, which saw his new club establish a 27-15 lead after 10 minutes.
Phoenix levelled at 31-31 midway through the second quarter but Sharks were still in the ascendency at half time with the impressive Brooks’ two making it 47-43.
Sharks controlled the third quarter and led 73-66 with just over a minute to play before Cheshire trimmed the gap to 73-69 heading into the final period.
