NICK Lewis may be a player for Sharks’ future but he’s very much the man of the moment after a scintillating performance in last night’s win over Newcastle Eagles.
Atiba Lyons has been named Coach of the Month for March and Lewis ensured April started with a victory as he tormented the Eagles all match.
Sharks were comfortable enough to score just eight points in the fourth quarter and still won by double-digits against an opponent they’ll meet again in the play-offs quarter-finals.
Sheffield raced out to a 10-2 lead thanks to excellent play by 20-year-old Lewis. The Canadian was causing the Eagles problems at both ends of the court and his fellow Sheffield Hallam University student Zach Gachette got in on the act with a buzzer beater to give Sharks a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Gachette opened the scoring in the second quarter as an 11-2 run - punctuated by a fierce Mike Tuck dunk - gave Sharks a 33-11 lead.
Eagles wouldn’t allow Sheffield to pull any further away though as they used all their experience to put together an 11-7 run.
Colin Sing, another Hallam student, scored Sharks’ final six points of the first half to give his team a 41-24 advantage at the interval.
A 7-0 close to the third quarter made it 62-43 and despite a 12-0 Eagles burst a Tuck basket and free throws by BJ Holmes sealed the victory.
