Sheffield Sharks have added to their squad with the signing of American forward Allen Payne.

Payne, aged 22, graduated from Auburn University in Alabama this summer and is the first new face in Sheffield’s squad for the forthcoming campaign after the club brought back the core of last season’s team.

The 6’6” Payne was a starter in all four years of his college career, where he averaged 7.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg in his final year for the Auburn Tigers

Sharks coach, Atiba Lyons said: “I am excited about Allen playing for the Sharks. He adds toughness and a high basketball IQ to a cohesive squad.

“He played four years at Auburn and sacrificed his individual performance to the betterment of the team. He is a do it all type player I feel will help us advance and improve upon last season.”

It is hoped that the new recruit will add to the Sharks squad that so nearly won the BBL last season and which will feature many returnees from last term, including BJ Holmes, Mike Tuck, Olu Babalola, Patrick Horstmann, Zach Gachette, Colin Sing, Nick Lewis and George Brownell.

Sharks open the new season at EIS on Friday 26 September against Durham Wildcats.
