Sheffield Sharks launched their new season with their eyes firmly fixed on winning the BBL Championship.

Coach Atiba Lyons has brought back the majority of last season’s squad, which finished second behind Newcastle Eagles, and added American big man Allen Payne.

He’s also trying to tie up a deal with an American trialist who would complete the Sharks line up.

Captain Mike Tuck, talking last night at a gathering of players and sponsors at B Braun in Chapeltown said the aim is to go one better than last season.

He said: “We’ve got that familiarity this year. I think we’ve still got that chip on our shoulder and the underdog mentality and I think that will take us the extra mile.

“It was disappointing not to win the league last season having lost only six games.

“It’s almost unheard of to do that. Winning the league is definitely our top goal.

“We’re aiming for the kind of season where we don’t give up any easy losses.”

Sharks are in pre-season action on Sunday away at Surrey United.
