The Sharks begin their BBL campaign tonight against Cheshire Phoenix (7.30pm) at the EIS with defence very much on their mind.
Coach Atiba Lyons has always prided himself on sending out a Sharks side prepared to defend well and if his pre-season training is anything to go by then his current squad have been well schooled.
New German forward Patrick Horstmann said the message has been clear: “Coach Lyons really emphasises the importance of defence, so I assume that we will transfer that from practice to games.
“I expect it to be a tough game. Everyone will be excited and motivated after a long summer and fighting through pre-season.”
Lyons has been watching video clips of new Phoenix players but says this early in the season it is all about how well his side performs.
“I just focus on us and how we will defend different scenarios,” he said. “I have a general idea on how I want this team to play.
“It’s not set in stone, you have to change and adapt with every new team.”
Sharks expect point guard Nick Lewis to be fit after an arm injury and will give debuts to new signings Horstmann, Jeremie Simmons and Da’Quan Cook.
