Unlucky Heyes misses Euro cut

HALLAMSHIRE’S Andy Heyes finished 27th in the senior race at the McCain Cross Challenge at Sefton Park, Liverpool, on Saturday.

He was seventh in the under-23 age group which meant he just misses out on a place in the six man UK team to compete in the European Championships in Budapest next month.

Meles Okbazghi (Sheffield RC) was 39th.

Calli Thackery (Hallamshire) was 11th in the junior women’s race whilst Hallamshire’s Tom Bains finished 36th in the junior men’s event.

The senior and junior races were trials for the European Championships but there were also top class races for the younger age groups.

Amelia Lancaster had a superb run to finish third in the under 13 girls race with her City of Sheffield teammate Emily Simpson coming 13th.

Alfie Manthorpe (City of Sheffield0 was 13th in the under 13 boys race with his Sheffield teammate Jonathon Shields 15th at under 15 level.

Hallamshire’s Imani Wilson was 22nd in the under 15 girls age group whilst Luke Cotter (Rotherham) and Joe Lancaster (City of Sheffield) were 29th and 37th respectively in the under 17 men’s race.
