South Yorkshire have selected arguably their strongest ever team to compete in the English Schools Championships at Birmingham over the next two days.

Nikita Campbell-Smith (Sheffield) defends her senior triple jump title while Billie Jo Harris (Sheffield) will do the same in the junior 100 metres.

Pole vaulter Adam Hague (Barnsley) could not compete last year due to an international call but he has previously won two junior English Schools titles at junior level. Hague is having a fine season and set a new personal best of 5.35 in Germany last week.

Toni Buckingham (Barnsley) was bronze medallist in the intermediate shot last year and competes again in the same age group, as does Aiden Davies (Doncaster), third in the senior 400m hurdles last time.

Runner up in the intermediate 100m last year, Kristie Edwards (Rotherham) moves up to the seniors.

Intermediate boys Joe McGrath (200m) and Joe Hobson (100m hurdles) both fifth last year, are still in the same age group and should be medal contenders.

Sheffield twins Brodie Elle (junior 200m) and Bronte Leigh Jones (discus) are both in the team.

Limited to 35 athletes due to a formula worked out when Yorkshire was split into smaller units in 1974, there is a growing feeling that the entry rules should be amended.

West Yorkshire have a team of 50 and the overall standard in South Yorkshire looks stronger. Some high quality athletes from the region are being denied the chance to compete in this prestigious event.
