South Yorkshire are well represented in the Yorkshire and Humberside teams at the London Mini Marathon on Sunday.
Successful City of Sheffield trio James Gormley, Josh Naisbitt and Jonathon Shields are all in the under 17 boys team whist City of Sheffield’s Anina Atkinson and Eleanor Curran, along with Hallamshire’s Charlotte Slack, are in the girls team.
At under 15 level Rotherham pair Kane Smith and Joe Massingham are in the team with Cameron Bell (Hallamshire) and Alfie Manthorpe (City of Sheffield). Lining up in the girls race are close rivals Alice Moore (Barnsley AC) and Amelia Lancaster (City of Sheffield).
The youngest age group, for under 13 runners, includes David Byrne (City of Sheffield in the boys race whilst Hallamshire’s Tilly Simpson leads the Yorks and Humberside challenge in the girls race. Ana Garcia and Elizabeth Wilkinson (City of Sheffield), along with Rotherham’s Mya Taylor are also in thye team.
The strength of the sport in South Yorkshire is demonstrated with 17 of the 36 places going to athletes from the region, selection based on performances in the major events throughout the season
The Sheffield Festival of Athletics takes place at the weekend with a 10k event at Rother Valley Country Park tomorrow and an open track and field meeting at Woodbourn Road on Sunday The 10k starts at 10:30 with a 3k fun run at 9:45
The track and field meeting starts at 10:30am.The sprints look strong with Ben Shields (City of Sheffield), Joe McGrath (Doncaster) and Kristie Edwards (City of Sheffield) all listed for both the 100 and 200 metres.
In the pole vault Adam Hague, Nicolas Cole and Abigail Roberts, all from the Dearne ALC club, will be looking for good early season marks.
