A great team effort from Hallamshire Harriers gave them silver medals in the Northern Cross Country Championships at Sunderland on Saturday.

They held Leeds City, winning the event for the ninth successive year, to just 21 points and beat bronze medallists Liverpool by a massive 101 points.

Hallamshire were splendidly led by Andy Heyes. Runner up in the junior race last year, Oxford medical student Heyes ran a fine race to finish 9th in the 500 strong field. Next for Hallamshire came Dave Archer with a fine run in 19th place, probably his best ever performance in a Hallamshire vest and he was closely followed by Andy Thake, consistent as ever in 21st place. Rob Little was 25th and then came Sheffield University student John Rocke, 45th. The final Hallamshire counter was Tom Jenkins, 51st.

Rob Baker, who counted for Hallamshire when they won the Yorkshire title, was below par due to illness but still finished a creditable 54th.

Individually, the race was a triumph for 1500 metre star Tom Lancashire (Bolton) who proved too strong for Steve Vernon (Stockport).

Susan Partridge was a convincing winner of the women’s race, just as dominant as she had been when winning the Yorkshire title two weeks ago. Bingley dominated the team race.

Hatti Dean won last year and Hallamshire took the team title. Dean was away training in Kenya and Hallamshire were without Julia Russell, whilst Nicols Squires did not finish. In the circumstances, the Hallamshire squad did well to get fourth place, losing the bronze medals by just four points.

They were superbly led by Lizzie Adams. Making her first appearance for some time, Adams ran a gritty race to finish fifth. Ruth Proctor (31st), Michelle Jenkins (47th) and Suzanne Sharman, 81st, completed the count for the Hallamshire team.

In the junior men’s race Joe Gratton (Hallamshire) had a fine run for fifth place whilst at under 13 level Jonathan Shields, 7th, led City of Sheffield to silver medals. He was supported by Alfie Manthorpe, 17th, Joe Hibbert, 27th and Evan Webb, 34th .

There were individual bronze medals for Hallamshire duo Fiona Bell (under 17) and Natalia Hackett (under 15).
