JESSICA Ennis is in top shape and benefitting from her training camp in Portugal, says her coach Toni Minichiello.
Speaking to The Star from the Team GB athletics training camp at Monte Gordo in Portugal, Minichiello is delighted with the form of Ennis less than a week before she arrives in the Olympic Village.
“It’s all going well,” he said. “We’ve had five or six days out here now where we’ve gone through our usual week’s work.
“It was good to get out of the cold and rain when we left. I know it has warmed up back home now, which is good because the warm weather makes the body perform better.
“She’s running well and is looking really sharp.
“We’ll have a couple more heavyish sessions then a day off and we’ll taper it right down after that until we fly back on July 31.”
Minichiello says the Olympic adventure still hasn’t hit him yet, but admits the British squad is in good spirits.
He said: “To me it still feels like a normal championship. I think Jess is beginning to realise it’s getting a bit closer, but she’s okay.
“The atmosphere in the team is really good. All the athletes are here which makes for a great camp.”
With the Opening Ceremony due tomorrow the athletes won’t be able to attend - yesterday the swimmers, who are in London, also pulled out of the event.
Minichiello says the team will still celebrate the occasion. “At the hotel there’s a theatre type room so I’m sure we’ll have a big screen on.
“We’ve all got our Opening Ceremony team clothes so I’m sure everyone will get together and dress up. It’ll be a good night.
“Everything is going well. It’s good to be away from all the distractions.
We’ve even struggled to get a decent Internet connection so we’re very much away from everything.,”
