It is just reward for Shields after a string of consistently good performances in recent months. He is part of a very strong British squad, his team mates in the junior (under 20) team being Scott Beattie (Morpeth), Tom Holden (Tonbridge) and Hugo Milner (Derby). Jonathan Shield had an ideal pedigree.

His mother Jane competed in the 3000 metres at the 1984 Olympics and the 10,000 in 1988.

Tomorrow is the tenth running of the Sheffield Open Cross Country meeting at Graves Park.

The meeting, organised by Sheffield Running Club, caters for all age groups with the senior men’s event incorporating the Harry Whitehurst Trophy. For many it is an ideal preparation for the Yorkshire Championships to be held early next month.
