Sheffield middle distance runners Lee Emanuel and Mukhtar Mohammed are in the British team to compete in this weekend’s European Indoor Championships in Prague.
Emanuel (City of Sheffield) is based for much of the year at New Mexico University and is currently in outstanding form. In Prague he goes for the 3000m having won the trial in Sheffield recently. He could equally have opted for the 1500m having run 3:35.66 last weekend in Birmingham. That time ranks second on the UK all time indoor list behind Rotherham’s Peter Elliott’s mark of 3:34.20 set 25 years ago, and ahead of third placed John Mayock (Barnsley AC). Emanuel is a serious contender for a medal.
Mohammed gets a place in the 800m having achieved the qualifying mark at Birmingham last weekend. He was a bronze medallist in the European Indoors two years ago and could again challenge for medal.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson starts favourite for the pentathlon. Having set UK indoor records in the long jump and high jump recently, she could even threaten Jessica Ennis-Hill’s national record of 4965.
Johnson-Thompson doesn’t think Ennis-Hill’s journey into motherhood will affect he ability to compete. “I would never underestimate Jess. If she’s going to come back she’s going to come back proper. I’ll just do what I normally do before any event and that’s prepare myself and focus on what I’ve got to do. That’s the best way to get results.”
