SATURDAY: Sheffield star shines in season opener

JESSICA Ennis won the Women’s 60 meter hurdles with 8.05 on the clock at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport today, writes Bob Westerdale.

Fans and allies at the Attercliffe arena seemed happy with such a fast season-opener.

Competing for Sheffield Flames, the 26-year-old Woodseats superstar jumped 6.19m in the long jump at the in the McCain City Challenge.

To put that into perspective, her indoor Personal Best is 6.44m and her major rival for gold, rival Tatyana Chernova jumped 6.54m last weekend.

Ennis finished in second place behind long jumper Abigail Irozoru, of Sale Harriers, Manchester.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson set a UK under-20 indoor long jump record of 6.39m.
