Sheffield running club Smiley Paces is organising a Festival of Miles to mark the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the four minute mile barrier for the first time.
The club are staging a number of mile races at Woodbourn Road on Tuesday, May 6 to cater for different age groups and standards.
It is being organised for the club by Jenny Chambers, first woman home in the first (full) Sheffield Marathon in 1982 who will run the city’s Half Marathon on Sunday for the 16th time.
Jenny ran for the then Sheffield AC but later joined Hallamshire Harriers and for the last five years has been involved with Smiley Paces.
She said: “Basically we are a group of women who got together in the school playground when taking our children.
“We’re organising the festival to commemorate the anniversary of Roger’s four-minute mile and to encourage more people to take up running.
“Whereas a half marathon is too much for a new starter a mile is a nice distance to start with.
“We want newcomers to give it a go. But club runners are also welcome to see if they can beat four minutes, which is still a respectable achievement 60 years on.
“So far we have had entries from local club athletes, schoolchildren and people who just want to see how fast they can run a mile.
“But we need more entries. So anyone who wants to join in please get in touch.”
