Rotherham Harriers were comfortable winners of the Yorkshire women’s road relay championship at Don Valley with Hallamshire taking silver medals. Hallamshire were also runners up in the men’s relay behind Holmfirth.
Hallamshire led the way on the opening 3000 metre leg through Nicola Squires (10:58) with Jess Fawcett (11:17) in second place for Rotherham. Leeds City stormed into the lead on stage two when Susan Partridge clocked 10:16, the fastest time of the race. It was Partridge’s first race since her 10th place in the World Marathon Championships. Laura Spence (11:12) overtook Hallamshire’s Helen Grainger to retain second place
Natasha Hatswell (11:23) took Rotherham into the lead on stage three before Steph Burns (11:01) ran on unchallenged anchor leg. Hallamshire, through Fiona Bell (11:53) ran strongly for the silver medals with Keighley and Craven taking third place.
There was never much doubt about Holmfirth winning the men’s six stage race, having led from the start. Mike Sprot (21:15) was seventh on the opening stage but Hallamshire moved into second through Tom Bains (21:02) and Andrew Challenger. It was a particularly fine run by Challenger whose time of 20:09 was the second fastest of the day.
