City of Sheffield athlete Mukhtar Mohammed confirmed his favourite’s tag when he won the 800 metres at the England U23 Championships at Bedford.
The time was unspectacular, but Mohammed has run some two seconds faster this year and has achieved the qualifying standard for the European Championships.
Another second day winner was Tesni Ward, also from the Sheffield club who won the U23 javelin by nearly five metres.
Combined event athlete Daniel Gardiner (Sheffield) concentrated on the long jump taking bronze. There were fourth places for Sheffield duo Thomas Phillips and Rosie Marino in the U23 400 hurdles. Luke South (Sheffield) won his heat in the U20 400 metres before narrowly missing a place in the final with third in his semi final in 48.83 whilst Rotherham’s Ben Shields missed a medal by the narrowest of margins.
Rotherham javelin thrower Jordan Carter was sixth in the U20 javelin and Calli Thackery (Hallamshire) was sixth in the U20 3,000 metres.
