WORKSOP golfer Lee Westwood and heptathlon queen Jessica Ennis are vying for the top awards at the inaugural MBNA Northern Sports Awards next month.
Westwood, ranked number two in the world, has been nominated for the Sportsman of the Year prize while Ennis has been shortlisted in the Sportswoman of the Year category along with Barnsley cricketer Katherine Brunt.
Ennis’s long-time coach, Toni Minichiello, Yorkshire opener Adam Lyth and Rotherham cyclist Ben Swift are also in the frame for awards.
The event, (July 4) is the first of its kind and is a celebration of sporting excellence in the north.
The Scottish Open has confirmed the participation of Westwood and Luke Donald (7-10 July). Donald, the world No1, and Westwood, whom he replaced at the top of the rankings, will play at Inverness. The Open takes place at Royal St George’s a week later.
