Jess wants to keep improving for title defence

JESSICA Ennis says the key to retaining her World Indoor Pentathlon title next month will be if she can bury her rivals hopes in the sand pit.

Ennis reigns supreme over closest rival Tatyana Chernova in the 60 metre hurdles and high jump, but lags behind the Russian in the long jump and shot put.

However, as The Star revealed this week, the 26-year-old Ennis may choose not to take part in the long jump today and tomorrow at the UK Indoor Championships and World trials at the EIS in Attercliffe.

She said: “We planned to do high jump, shot and hurdles and not really planned to do the long jump. I did the long jump last weekend and I’ll be doing it in Birmingham (British Indoor Grand Prix). If I feel reasonably fresh after today I may do it.

“The key area (at the World Indoors) will be long jump and maybe shot put.”

Ennis has enjoyed a good start to the season. Although her shot put and long jump scores were a little below where she wanted them to be her 60m hurdles time of 8.05 seconds last weekend was truly world-class.

She said: “I really enjoy hurdling, so when I run well it’s great. But I need to improve everything.

“I was slightly disappointed with my long jump but pleased with my hurdling so it kind of evened out. It was still frustrating though.”

Ennis doesn’t have to worry about qualifying for the World Championships by virtue of defending the title she won in Qatar in 2010.

She said competing in Sheffield remains special, saying: “I’m really looking forward to competing here. It’s a great place to train but when it’s done up ready for competition it’s a great stage. Hopefully I’ll have a good weekend.”

To be honest if she focused more on her training and less on appearing in the media and promoting products, she would be well on her way. She probably has enough money never to work again any way. I am getting fed up of seeing her picture every where.
