JESSICA Ennis got her season off to a winning start with victory at the Northern Indoor championship today at the English Institute of Sport, writes Richard Fidler.
In a scene that is a million miles away from the pressure cooker atmosphere of the Olympic Stadium this summer, Ennis did just enough in the shot put to win the Northern title.
Under the watchful eye of coach Toni Minichiello Ennis started with a distance of 13.46 metres and went on to record measurements of 13.28m, 13.03m, 13.69m, 13.86m and a final round attempt of 13.95m.
The 26-year-old Millhouses-based heptathlete will be back at the EIS in February for the UK Championships and World Indoor Championships trials before defending her World Indoor Pentathlon title in Turkey in March.
The Northern Indoor Championships are on all weekend at the EIS, starting at 10.30am. They feature the best of the athletes from the north of England.
