Another fine run by Hallamshire star Hatti Dean gave her the silver medal in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championship at Birmingham, on Saturday, a performance which guarantees her a place in the GB team for the World Cross Country Championships.

Good as Dean’s performance was, however, it was no match for the young Hampshire runner Charlotte Purdue. Only 19, and having her first run as a senior, Purdue is an exciting talent having taken the place at the head of the rankings which belonged to her injured Aldershot team mate Steph Twell.

Dean spearheaded the Yorkshire challenge but they missed out on team medals, finishing fourth.

Yorkshire were also fourth in the men’s race, won by Hampshire’s Andy Vernon. The Yorks team were led by Leeds’ James Wilkinson in 13th place but were seven points away from the bronze medals. Andy Heyes (Hallamshire) had a good run for Yorkshire with 42nd place.

There was a stunning performance from Hallamshire’s Natalia Hackett who ran the race of her life to take the under 15 title. Hackett has run well all season but has been overshadowed by Scarborough’s Bronwen Owen. On Saturday she runner made a break on the second lap with a powerful surge that Owen couldn’t respond to. Hackett had a 10 second winn over her. Yorkshire took the silver medals but weren’t strong enough to beat Surrey.
