HATTI Dean (Hallamshire) competes in the McCain Cross Country Challenge in Liverpool today.

Dean returned from high-altitude training in Kenya on Thursday along with several other top UK distance runners and is hoping to be in top shape for the race which serves as a trial to pick the GB team for the European Championships in Slovenia, on December 11.

Dean has one of the best records of any British woman over the country including the National title and top British placing at world and European level.

Although she’s raced sparingly since injury, Dean will be looking for a top-three place.

n The third meeting in the South Yorkshire Cross Country League series takes place tomorrow at Mount St Mary’s College, Spinkhill.

The men’s title, decided on the best three results of the four meetings, is wide open. Rob Baker won the first race but did not run last time when his Hallam teammate, Andy Thake, triumphed. In the women’s contest Sheffield University student Poppy Blake has won both races and is on target for the title.
