Several South Yorkshire athletes are expected to be prominent at the Northern Cross Country Championships at Pontefract tomorrow.
Andy Heyes and Steve Bayton should give Hallamshire a great start in the men’s race. Heyes, 2014 Yorkshire winner, missed this year’s county championship because of an international commitment whilst Bayton was third in the Yorkshire. Heyes should be a leading contender for an individual medal. Even with several runners missing from the Yorkshire line up due to injury, Hallam were still good enough for second place and will be stronger this time.
With a quartet of Sam Johnson, Robyn Lanceley, Jess Fawcett and Jenny Blizard, Rotherham won the Yorkshire team title is looking for further medals.
Yorkshire junior winner Connor Milnes (Hallam) runs in the u20 race whilst James Gormley has a real chance of success in the u17 age group with his City of Sheffield team mate Jonathan Shields also expected to be well placed.
Yorkshire champion Alfie Manthorpe leads a strong Sheffield team in the u15 race. Sheffield are also strong in the u15 girls section with Emily Simpson and Amelia Lancaster, second and third at Yorkshire level expected to be among the leaders. However, the county winner in this age group was Hallam’s Tilly Simpson and it would be no surprise to see her win at Northern level even though she is in her first year in the age group.
The first race is at 11am.
The seniors go at 2:00 pm (women) and 2:55 (men).
Meanwhile pole vaulter Luke Cutts (Dearne ALC) has been selected for the British team to compete in the Sainsbury Indoor International match at Glasgow tomorrow,
