TENDERS for the redevelopment of Woodbourn Road athletics stadium in Darnall will be submitted today.
The stadium was closed for business on July 28 with operating costs being cited as the reason why by Sheffield City Council and facility managers Sheffield International Venues.
Already minor vandalism and weather damage has started to make the site look run down but it’s hoped a new tenant or owner could make a going concern of the venue.
Former heptathlete and world bobsleigh champion Nicola Minichiello, who is heading one of the companies submitting a tender to the council today, said it was a shame that the stadium had to close at all.
She said: “It was really disappointing when the decision was made. I was devastated to hear that it was closing.
“I appreciate the costs to run the venue but it was disappointing that it was run into the ground.”
Opened on July 4 1987 by councillor Peter Price Woodbourn was the city’s first all-weather track.
It was the first of the new wave of sporting facilities in Sheffield built for the World Student Games in 1991.
And while it was never used for the event itself it has been the home of countless athletics events from school sports days to fixtures including City of Sheffield Athletics Club and Hallamshire Harriers.
