THREE Doncaster Athletic Club members finished amongst the medals in last weekend’s Northern Counties Championships at Cudworth.

Bertie Houghton (16) won the silver medal in the boys’ Under-17 1,500m steeplechase in only his second attempt at the event.

“The only other time I’ve run the race was at the end of a Young Athletes League meeting,” said the Doncaster youngster, who competed in the 1,500m at last month’s English Schools’ Championships.

“I ran a lot faster but there is a lot more to come. My technique wasn’t very good at the water jump.”

Nichole Bewley, who won a silver medal in the 80m hurdles two years ago, won a silver in the girls’ Under-17 shot.

Nichole, who is carrying a hamstring injury, is hoping to be fit to compete in the hepthalon in the English Schools’ Combined Events Championships on September 3 - the top four in which will be picked to represent England in UK Schools’ international.

Lucy Chappell picked up medals in the Under-15 long jump and the high jump. Both are coached by Nichole’s dad, Bruce.
