In a meeting dominated by British runners, Hallamshire’s Hatti Dean had a disappointing run in the European Cross Country Championships in Velenje, Slovenia, yesterday. To finish 18th was not a bad run but below Dean’s aspirations.

The race was won impressively by Ireland’s Fionnuala Britton, the British team won a close team race from defending champions Portugal.

Gemma Steel was first British runner home with a splendid bronze medal with Freya Murray, 12th, Julia Bleasdale 13th and Ella Baker 14th with Dean out of the counting quartet.

Dean had dominated the trial two weeks earlier, winning from Steel and was realistically expected to be a contender for an individual medal. She started well enough but a bad patch in the middle of the race put paid to her hopes. In the event, she ran on well and looked to be making ground at the end of the twisting and mainly flat course.

Rob Little (Hallamshire) won the fourth and final South Yorkshire Cross Country League race at the Northern Racing College, Doncaster, yesterday and took the South Yorkshire Championship held in conjunction. Little’s win means there have been four different winners of the league matches.

The women’s race was dominated by Rotherham who had the first three, Jade Allen winning from Steph Burns and Samantha Johnson. Allen has two wins and two runner up spots from the four races.

The biggest winning margin of the day came from Hallamshire’s Natalia Hackett who beat her team mate Fiona Bell by 45 seconds.
