Hallamshire’s Hatti Dean finished runner up in the National Cross Country Championship at Alton Towers on Saturday, giving another fine performance in an excellent season. She now has a complete set of medals, winning in 2009 and finishing third last year.

In very muddy conditions, Dean battled it out with Liz Yelling (Bedford), the Hallamshire athlete winning that battle only to find Louise Damen (Winchester) coming through strongly to snatch the title.

Hallamshire’s Lizzie Adams had a top class run to finish a splendid 16th place giving Hallamshire a great start in the team race. They ended up fourth, the same position as last year, and not far away from the bronze medals. The other two Hallamshire counters were Michelle Jenkins, 84th and Julia Russell, 94th in a field of 552 finishers.

Leeds City won the men’s team title at the National Cross Country Championships at Alton Towers on Saturday to continue a remarkable sequence in the famous race. They have been medallists for the last nine years, a post war record, and five times winners.

In a race won by Steve Vernon (Stockport), Yorkshire champions Hallamshire did well to finish 7th team, an improvement of two places on last year. They were led by Andy Heyes in 38th place and also placed Rob Little, John Rocke and Rob Baker in the top 100 in a massive field if 1300.

Natalia Hackett (Hallamshire) ran well for eighth place in the under 15 girls race whilst City of Sheffield, led by Jonathan Shields, 32nd, were fourth at under 13 level.
