A below-strength City of Sheffield team did well to finish equal fifth in the second round of the British League (Premiership) at Birmingham and are fourth overall at the halfway stage.

Whilst not in a position to challenge Shaftsbury Barnet and City of Manchester for the title they are not in any danger of relegation.

The 400 metres hurdles was the best event for Sheffield with Steve Garrett running a gritty race to win in 52.38 and Tom Grantham taking fourth place in the B race with 54.80.

In the pole vault Luke Cutts, not at his best having missed some training due to injury, was beaten by Andrew Sutcliffe (Manchester) and Max Eaves (Newham and Essex), both internationals. Cutts cleared 5.20, a height shared with his Sheffield team mate Adam Hague, a junior, who comfortably won the B event.

Grant Plenderleith was fourth for Sheffield in a fast 400 metres clocking 47.12 with Tim Burn runner up in the B race (48.08). A convert to athletics from Scottish football, Plenderleith’s time was a personal best and reinforces his claim for a place in the Scottish relay squad for the Commonwealth Games.

The 800 metres was another good event for Sheffield with Steve Evison third in 1:51.05 and Paul Rice third in the B race (1:54.65).

In the 100 metres Ben Shields was fourth for Sheffield in 10.80 with Andre Wright taking the B race in 10.88. Liam Ramsay was third in the 110 metres hurdles in 14.6 as well as contributing in other events.

In the field Mark Plowman did well in thye discus, his best effort of 50.02 giving him third place.

Rotherham beat City of Sheffield in the second Northern League (Division 2EC) meeting at Doncaster, reversing the result of the first match. It was a closely contested match with Chesterfield just a point behind Sheffield and hosts Doncaster only 19 points behind the leaders. It leaves Sheffield and Rotherham equal on top of the division with Chesterfield third.
